Never is nutrition and yoga as important as when you are growing a new life inside of you.
Nutritionally, you need to make sure that you get all the nutrients required for growing a healthy baby while still maintaining ample supply for your own body to thrive on. In addition, it is important to avoid all the chemicals, toxins, and impure particles found in foods that may harm a tiny developing body. The quality of your baby’s future health is determined long before your child is born.
After you baby is born, it is really important to continue to nurture yourself (especially if you are breastfeeding), while you may begin a gentle weight loss regimen to lose the baby weight.
I cannot stress enough how important yoga is during pregnancy. Personally, I practiced everyday until the day I went into labor, and I contribute this to my completely intervention-free, unmedicated, smooth labor.
Yoga prepares you for labor like nothing else. It incorporates the breathing, the opening of the hips and pelvis, the strengthening of the abdomen and pelvic muscles, and it calms you and helps you relax. In addition, growing fetuses loves the calming affects it has on their momma!
During my pregnancy I searched in vain for a good prenatal yoga class in this area, so I decided to start my own group. I did lots of research and practice myself to come up with a yoga sequence that is challenging, opening, calming and strength building, all at once.
I still teach this yoga class in a group setting weekly at the Native Yoga Center, but I also teach it one-on-one with pregnant women in the privacy of their own home at their own convenience.
